SpeakerSavvy: Wisdom from the Dark Side
(A Bureau Owner Comes Clean)

with Bronwyn Hesketh

Bronwyn HeskethSpeakers Bureaus have two sets of customers they work with — those who are looking for speakers, and speakers who are looking for gigs. The companies and associations who come to them are depending on them to be aware of the speakers out there, and who will best serve their needs.

If you’re a speaker, you would be wise to learn what speakers bureaus know about what works to get you hired, and what you can do to enhance — or damage — your reputation in the industry.

Our next program features the long-time owner of a very successful international speakers bureau. She will look at trends she sees in the speaking industry, and offer tips that will help you stand out.

Happy New Year!

We’re hoping one of your new year’s resolutions is to submit tips to SNN! Make it easy and set a calendar reminder for every Wed. to ask yourself, “What did I learn or discover this week that would be helpful to my speaker colleagues?” It could be a new website, SEO expert, website designer, travel tip, tech tool, negotiation tactic, way to get in the media, social media shortcut — pretty much anything which you’ve discovered helps you run your business better.

When the reminder comes up, jot us a note with your discovery and we’ll share it with thousands of your colleagues.

Miscellaneous Tips

Hybrid way to use a calendar appBill Conerly

Many people use an app such as Calendly to schedule appointments. They will send an email with a link to their calendar and let the other person pick a day and time. Some people like the efficiency, but others are turned off by the impersonal nature of the app. I’ve heard about a 50-50 split in casual conversations.

You can have the best of both worlds. To initiate an appointment, pick a day and time, and then write “If this works for you, let me know. If it’s not convenient, you can find other times open on my calendar at .”

If you use the app all by itself, keep track of who is not responding — or you may not hear from then again.

Consider “micro-resolutions” for the new yearSusan Nurre

This article recently caught my eye as my thoughts were turning to my “resolutions” for the new year. The author’s idea of 12 micro-resolutions seemed to fit where I am in my life, both professionally and personally.

My January micro-resolution is to work for 30 minutes a day on a project that I’ve been starting/stopping for the past year — I’m curious to see how I’ll carve out 30 minutes each day and what kind of difference it might make.

While I haven’t planned the entire year of micro-resolutions, here are thoughts for some that might fit:

  • Journal each day — possibly focused on business or personal — maybe set a minimum time limit per day
  • Clean out business files — maybe 10 a day, every day for the month, can be paper files or electronic
  • Work 30 minutes a day on that book I’ve been wanting to write
  • Read 30 minutes a day — again I may choose to focus on reading for business growth, personal growth or pure pleasure
  • Send a note (either hand-written or email) to one person every day — could be new/old/prospective clients, family, friends
  • Exercise every day — either for a set time limit (30 minutes) or a set activity (walking 200 stairs)

SpeakerSavvy: Wisdom from the Dark Side
(A Bureau Owner Comes Clean)

with Bronwyn Hesketh

Bronwyn HeskethYou’ve got a great talk — funny, insightful, with useful information. Yet your phone isn’t ringing off the hook. You’d love someone who hears candid client feedback tell you what makes good talks get booked more.

That someone is a bureau owner willing to share what clients tell her after the speaker has left. She’s heard the good and bad. She knows what will get that speaker booked again with a steady stream of referrals. And what the speaker did before, during, and after the talk that will ensure the client never hires him/her again.

Do you want to know what she knows? Of course you do! Bronwyn will tell you what speakers (collectively, not by name, of course) do that makes them the perfect speaker, and what to avoid to not be the one who never gets booked again.

Also, she finds many speakers are confused about what bureaus will and won’t do for you, so she’ll clarify that. Plus, she’ll tell the truth about showcases and how to make these pay off for you.

In this program you will learn:

  • what makes a salable talk
  • how to be the perfect speaker to work with
  • what a bureau will and won’t do for you
  • the truth about showcases
  • the best way to approach bureaus
  • trends in the speaking industry

Note: there will not be a live session available for this program. Please order the recording.
