How to Create Your One-Person Show

with Merit Kahn Gest, CSP

Merit GestHave you ever thought about performing a one-person show in a theater? It could give you a different outlet for your life stories that are powerful or entertaining but maybe not quite right for the business-oriented keynotes you do.

Even if you can’t envision yourself creating such a show, you will get a lot from hearing a speaker who did just that. The performance techniques that can make a show successful can also make your keynote presentations stand out even more.

Read more about this session at the bottom of this newsletter, then register or pre-order the MP3. Note: Everyone who registers for the teleseminar will get the MP3 recording of the session for free.

Hold the date:

  • Mon., Feb. 10 — Nate Woodbury will share how to find, vet, hire and work with smart assistants from the Philippines. Details coming soon.

Intensive — Adapting Your Content
for Lucrative E-Learning Courses

Colleagues are making big bucks with e-learning, both for individuals and for corporate clients. E-learning is not just uploading webinar videos, especially if you want to get into the lucrative continuing education market. It needs to have components that prove attendees understand the information.

With these three recordings, you’ll hear different approaches and strategies for making high-quality e-learning to sell to your clients and individuals.

  • “Cracking the Continuing Education Code for a Healthy Revenue Stream” with Jeff Justice, CSP
  • “Creating a Quality Video Course” with Mark Camacho
  • “Multiply Your Income by Leveraging Your Speech Content into a Training Product That You Don’t Have to Deliver” with Shep Hyken, CSP, CPAE

Miscellaneous Tips

Authors beware — Randy Gage

Beware of writing contests from Pressfuls.

(Editors’ note: Randy offered lots of interesting information — and opinions — in his SNN teleseminars: “Growing Your Business in the Digital World,” “Transforming from Speaker to Information Entrepreneur” and “Booking More Business in Difficult Times.”)

Increasing views for your TED talkMarcia Reynolds

Want to increase your views on your TEDx Talk? Connect with Dylan Taylor (dylant@fromzero2sixty.com) who manages client relations for From Zero to Sixty. In less than a month my views grew over 10k with their little starter package. They have larger packages for great prices too if you want to bump your numbers more quickly. Get your words and work out there!

Avoid Photoshopping headshotsMilo Shapiro

Resist the temptation to Photoshop away any headshot aspects that show your age. They aren’t going away and, unless you want to do headshots again in two years, you just made that photo look really dated for yourself only two years down the road. Yes, Photoshop away blemishes, stray hairs, glare tones. But your base face is the you that you bring to the event.

New scam targeting speakersBill Conerly

I’m usually pretty good at spotting phishing schemes, but this one came from an association I’d pitched last year, with the name of the meetings manager and the logo of the association. The attached PDF asked me to sign in to a documents website to view the proposal. It was very tempting. The association does not show its staff emails, so I connected with the meetings manager through LinkedIn, with a note asking about the email’s authenticity. She promptly accepted my connection invite and told me it was truly a phishing email.

Creating a book from weekly emailed questionsWendy Kalman

I have been using a wonderful service to capture my parents’ life story; theoretically it can be adapted for anyone who wants to put together a chaptered book and needs help organizing and laying it out. Storyworth emails weekly questions for a year; responses (and attached photos) are automatically uploaded where they can be further edited. Questions are also editable/replaceable. At the end, you receive one printed hardcover book per storyteller with an option to purchase more. Generating PDFs at any time provides an automatic layout of what the 6" x 9" printed book will look like.

While the service is not really meant as a general purpose publishing tool, I like the idea of using them because of the automatic design layout, and am considering creating a book this way from my weekly blog. Each chapter would be a blog; once done I can add hyperlinks on my own in the PDF and add a cover.

How to Create Your One-Person Show

with Merit Kahn Gest, CSP

Merit GestA strong keynote and an entertaining one-person show have a lot in common: stories, compelling message, humor, entertainment, inspiration. Many speakers have funny or poignant stories that just don’t fit with their corporate content. A one-person show would allow you to express parts of your philosophy, personality and life that can’t be shoehorned into a business talk.

If you’ve ever pondered performing a one-person show, you don’t want to miss this teleseminar. Merit will discuss these questions and more: How could you turn your keynote into a theatrical performance? How is crafting a piece of theater similar and different from crafting a keynote? How much time and money would it take? What’s the possibility of monetizing the show?

Merit created a one-woman show to celebrate her 50th birthday, performing it in a sold-out, 175-seat theater. In this teleseminar, she will reverse engineer what made the show successful and how to bring more performance to your keynote — or create a one-person show that inspires like your keynote.

You will learn:

  • how to create a structure for your one-person show
  • a realistic timeline from start to finish
  • a laundry list of things I wish I knew before, during and after the show
  • who you will need on your team
  • what is possible after your performance
  • how to monetize your show
Register or order the MP3 recording.
Note: people who register for the teleseminar will get the MP3 recording of the session for free.
