The danger of being thought leaders — Vickie Sullivan
This season of crazy times came with a lot of shockers. One of the biggest: How thought leaders and do-gooders like Dr. Fauci and Bill Gates became the focus of hate and conspiracy theories involving COVID-19.
A great example is this spring Fast Company article about Gates. Move past the players and social media role. This is the dark side of being thought leaders who stand out and are in the spotlight.
Could this happen to you? On a smaller scale, absolutely. Even less-famous thought leaders can have targets on their backs. Here are two things you need to know if you are subject to a strike of this nature:
Let’s be clear: What Gates and Fauci are experiencing is not sincere opposition. This is vilification to get attention. This dynamic requires a different interpretation and response. Be strategic; proceed with your brand with top of mind.
Tech service provider, and mentorship opportunity — Tony Alessandra
I’ve been working with a Black-owned business serving the underrepresented working to increase diversity and inclusion in the technology arena. They have teams working on building websites and apps, as well as working on internal projects including enhancements to their Learning Management System, tools and reporting. “Soft” sales calls — Rebecca Morgan
I’ve been interviewing my clients for an article I’m writing. At the end of the interview, they often ask me what I’ve been working on. When I tell them about recent projects, it leads to what I can do for them now.
I’ve now expanded my interviews to LinkedIn contacts I barely know. Nearly half immediately said yes to an interview and set up a time. The interviews are focused on the article contents, but I’m seeing the same pattern — the interviewee wants to know more about my services.
The key is to focus on the interview questions and let the interviewee ask about your services. If you bring it up, it will seem like the interview is a ruse — not a good look.

Avoid Zoom backgrounds — Ron Wroblewski
Zoom virtual backgrounds are snazzy, but are they too distracting? My recommendation is to avoid all virtual backgrounds, but especially avoid the ones with movement, like the Northern lights or beach with waves.
Even the static backgrounds can generate weird video aberrations when the person on-camera makes a movement. Shrug your shoulders, and sometimes a strange horn-like lump appears on your shoulder that grows and then shrinks back. I’ve seen people reach for a glass of water and a disembodied hand pops on screen. If you’re wearing a headset that also exacerbates the phenomena.
Beware of Pixlr terms of service — Johanna Rothman
Pixlr terms of service #8, “Your Content” says: “You hereby grant Pixlr an irrevocable, non-exclusive, royalty-free worldwide license to reproduce, distribute, publicly display, perform and prepare derivative works and otherwise exploit Your Content and to grant sub-licenses of the foregoing rights. You hereby irrevocably waive any claims and assertions of moral rights or attribution with respect to Your Content.”
I would never use an online service that says they can use my content as they want to. My content is my content. I choose what and how to share.
