Intensive — Create and Leverage Your Brand Visually and Powerfully

Highly successful businesses have instantly identifiable logos and brand materials. We can tell some brands by just a unique shape or color, even without the brand’s name. We need to make sure our brand’s visuals telegraph our value and quality, even though we don’t have millions in our marketing budget.

There are myriad ways to ensure you have a high-quality look to everything associated with you and your brand, from the photos you use in your slides, website, videos, etc. How do you ensure your materials stand out, rather than look like the same stock images others are using?

It’s not as hard, time-consuming, or expensive as you may think. These three recordings will help you think through your visual branding and give you ideas on how to make yours even more powerful.

  • “Craft a Compelling Visual Story with Images Unique to You” with John DeMato
  • “Tell Powerful Stories with Pictures: A National Geographic Photographer Shares Tips for Speakers” with Dick Durrance

Miscellaneous Tips

Focus on repurposing your contentChuck Reaves

Nido Qubein gave me this valuable advice. He said anytime we create something, it should have at least two purposes. We can plan to have multiple versions of any media we produce and use it for different industries, clients, markets, and other purposes. Content updates can also have numerous uses. I recently made what might seem to be a simple change in my core curriculum. I looked for other uses for the concept.

Think about how you can repurpose your content to address different markets and industries. 2022 may open some unexpected doors for you.

(Rebecca’s note: Chuck has generously offered to send a sample to anyone who would like. Just email him.)

How do you trademark a name?Rebecca Morgan

Your trademark may be your most valuable asset and should be protected. In this article, Bill Honaker, JD, shares US federal and state trademark requirements in the United States, as well as how to register a trademark in other countries.

Get the best help: are those offers right for you?Vickie Sullivan

Often as a person gets more successful, they get flooded with offers from businesses and people saying they can help. They have services, strategies, tools, etc., and they all promise the same thing: growth.

It’s easy to reject offers that don’t fit with your plans or business ideas. The harder task: evaluating the ones that resonate with you.

How do you determine if offers are right for you? Before you sign on the dotted line, ask yourself these two questions:

  • What’s the real result here? Sometimes we want something because of what we think that will give us. Example: Authors hire a book promotion firm to get rave reviews, but what they really want is more book sales. Focusing on the end game opens your mind to other options (and helps answer the next question below).
  • Does their approach work in my situation? Many folks have a one-size-fits-all process. That’s OK; it’s efficient. It’s up to you to determine if that system works for you, though. Don’t assume their tactics fits your needs.

Most of us do a good job asking the right questions before hiring an outside firm to help us. But you should go beyond the information these partners give and determine if you really need what they’re selling.

Topic of the Month (TOTM) — Your Input Wanted

Our TOTM is from Lynda Kavanagh: What are tips for publishing e-books directly to e-readers, not through printers?

Send your brief, pithy responses *that are different from those previously mentioned* to editor@SpeakerNetNews.com. Please put “Topic of the Month” or “TOTM” in the subject line.

I recommend using Smashwords for sales and distribution. Their split is up to 80% to the author. They can sell most formats of e-publications (meaning, any publication which can be read on the e-book apps used by Apple products, Android, and PCs, including Kindles and Nooks) and if needed, they can supply an ISBN at no cost. They also distribute to retailers and libraries (for which the author receives 60%).

Prior to uploading, your book will need to be formatted to be read by e-reading apps. Smashwords provides the guidelines you need if you want to try to do the formatting yourself (or share the instructions with someone else).

You can also set up coupons so that you can run contests or giveaways or even just share an e-book with someone else.

I have sold e-book versions of my self-published softcover books for 12+ years through Smashwords and receive payouts monthly. Their service has always been excellent.
