If you want to get interviewed on top shows and podcasts, your social media messaging can give you a booking advantage. Even one post a week on LinkedIn (or whatever platform your audience is on) can reinforce that you are an authority worth booking.

Recently, I had a spirited conversation with SpeakerMatch CEO Bryan Caplovitz about bringing speakers and event planners together.

As a former speaker’s agent, I know the power of finding buyers who are ready to buy. (Back then, at least half of my calls were to decision-makers who weren’t ready.) The next step is to make sure those event planners are interested in your speaking. Where they go to first: the speaker directory.

Bryan shared some tips that could help us in any speaker pitch:

  • Put your best stuff up front: Too many folks don’t highlight what planners want to know. “The most important thing to show these people is what you bring to the table,” he explains. “And so many times, the best stuff is at the end.”
  • Show off your personality: Planners have seen it all and are looking for what will resonate with their audience. For example, if you’re a humorist, write funny copy. “Too many people say, ‘I motivate your audience, I invite them to laugh.’ This is way too vague,” Bryan says.

In short, make the planner’s job easier. When buyers see a lot of speakers, only those who stand out will get the call.


An acronym to remember the four key neurotransmittersJeff Goldfinger

DOSE is an acronym to remember the four key neurotransmitters that should be targeted in every talk.

Dopamine: The reward drug.
Oxytocin: The love drug.
Serotonin: The mood drug.
Epinephrine: The fear drug.

Every oral presentation should be sprinkled with just the right amount of each.

To assist in this technique, ask yourself the following questions during the design of your talk.

  1. Dopamine: What will the listener achieve if they follow the recommendations I’m making? Monetarily? Reputationally? Career-ly?
  2. Oxytocin: In how many ways can I connect with my audience? Generationally, linguistically, nationally, academically, geographically, religiously, gender-ly, fanatically (Go Cats!)?
  3. Serotonin: In what ways can I shift the audience’s mood from something resistive (e.g., distrustful, skeptical, resigned, confused) to something more receptive (e.g., ambitious, resolute, trusting, confident, curious)?
  4. Epinephrine: Use sparingly to wake up the audience’s nervous system. What might happen if they don’t take my advice, ignore this issue, do the opposite?

All else being equal, a presentation that can elicit the largest DOSE-ing effect will be remembered longer.

Three of the best examples I know are Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address (1863), JFK’s “Moon Speech” (1962) and Steve Jobs’ iPhone launch (2007). Masterful speech chemistry.
