From the Editors

Every year, our friends at SpeakerFlow produce the State of the Industry Report. It helps all of us understand how our industry has changed over the last year, what expert businesses are experiencing real-time, and where everyone thinks the industry is heading. We’ve partnered with SpeakerFlow and that means when the report findings are live, you’ll get access before the general public.

All responses are completely anonymous and it’s designed to take a deep look into how all of us run our business so we can share insights on what’s working, what’s not, and what’s to come in 2024. It’s important that we all share this survey to every thought leader we know — the more data, the better!

Here’s a link to take the survey. It may take up to 20 minutes but there’s a save and continue option should you want to come back later. The survey closes on 4/15/24, and we’ll share the report in early May. Thank you in advance for helping the industry understand where we’ve been, where we are, and where we’re going. We couldn’t do this without you!

Intensive — Learn Little-Known On-Camera Tips from Broadcasters and HSN Star

Video is now ubiquitous. It’s how you’re found by new followers, fans, and clients. So how do you stand out in the masses of videos uploaded each second?

Bad video will stop your business from growing. People will stop watching if the video seems too amateurish.

Would you like to know some little-known tricks to being compelling on camera, shared by former broadcasters, and a million-dollar seller from the Home Shopping Network?

These three recordings will give you some new ideas.

  • “Be a Star of the Small Screen: How to Film Yourself on Your Phone so You Don’t Look or Sound Like an Idiot” with Penny Haslam
  • “How to Hone Your On-Camera Skills to Close More Sales” with Carolyn Strauss, CSP

Miscellaneous Tips

Position yourself as an authority on social mediaMelanie Benson

Busy speakers and experts often neglect one important aspect of their authority positioning — social media. If you want to get interviewed on top shows and podcasts, your social media messaging can give you a booking advantage. Even one post a week on LinkedIn (or whatever platform your audience is on) can reinforce that you are an authority worth booking.

Two tips for writing stand-out speaker directory listingsVickie Sullivan

Recently, I had a spirited conversation with SpeakerMatch CEO Bryan Caplovitz about bringing speakers and event planners together.

As a former speaker’s agent, I know the power of finding buyers who are ready to buy. (Back then, at least half of my calls were to decision-makers who weren’t ready.) The next step is to make sure those event planners are interested in your speaking. Where they go to first: the speaker directory.

Bryan shared some tips that could help us in any speaker pitch:

  • Put your best stuff up front: Too many folks don’t highlight what planners want to know. “The most important thing to show these people is what you bring to the table,” he explains. “And so many times, the best stuff is at the end.”
  • Show off your personality: Planners have seen it all and are looking for what will resonate with their audience. For example, if you’re a humorist, write funny copy. “Too many people say, ‘I motivate your audience, I invite them to laugh.’ This is way too vague,” Bryan says.

In short, make the planner’s job easier. When buyers see a lot of speakers, only those who stand out will get the call.

An acronym to remember the four key neurotransmittersJeff Goldfinger

DOSE is an acronym to remember the four key neurotransmitters that should be targeted in every talk.

Dopamine: The reward drug.
Oxytocin: The love drug.
Serotonin: The mood drug.
Epinephrine: The fear drug.

Every oral presentation should be sprinkled with just the right amount of each.

To assist in this technique, ask yourself the following questions during the design of your talk.

  1. Dopamine: What will the listener achieve if they follow the recommendations I’m making? Monetarily? Reputationally? Career-ly?
  2. Oxytocin: In how many ways can I connect with my audience? Generationally, linguistically, nationally, academically, geographically, religiously, gender-ly, fanatically (Go Cats!)?
  3. Serotonin: In what ways can I shift the audience’s mood from something resistive (e.g., distrustful, skeptical, resigned, confused) to something more receptive (e.g., ambitious, resolute, trusting, confident, curious)?
  4. Epinephrine: Use sparingly to wake up the audience’s nervous system. What might happen if they don’t take my advice, ignore this issue, do the opposite?

All else being equal, a presentation that can elicit the largest DOSE-ing effect will be remembered longer.

Three of the best examples I know are Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address (1863), JFK’s “Moon Speech” (1962) and Steve Jobs’ iPhone launch (2007). Masterful speech chemistry.

Elegant Legal Writing by Ryan McCarl. Please don’t let the title mislead you. Although the book is aimed at lawyers, most of it addresses common issues in making your writing as clear and clean as possible. This tutorial is useful for crafting any written work product, email, blog post, or promotional copy for your speaking business. The book is chock full of practical tips that will make you a better writer if implemented.

Mark Herschberg

Like, Literally, Dude: Arguing for the Good in Bad English by Valerie Fridland. It’s a very fun read about a tool every speaker uses. It turns out those disfluencies and discourse markers we’ve all worked so hard to remove, may not be so bad for our speaking after all. Learn the history, and in some cases benefits, of the verbal tics we love to hate.
